Hemingway’s “A Soldier’s Home”

Krebs has three identities. The narrator calls him Krebs, while his mother calls him Harold, and his sister calls him ?Hare?. Why give one character three identities? In the short story ?A Soldier?s Home, Hemingway embarks in the life of the main character Krebs. Krebs, a Soldier, who comes back home from war suddenly, feels out of place in his returning. Throughout the story Krebs, the main character is named two other names besides Krebs. His mother calls him Harold, his sister calls him Hair and Hemingway calls him Krebs. All three names are different identities that are subliminally introduced: Krebs is related to his military lifestyle; Harold is his name called by mom to son and Hair is warmth that is between brother and sister.
